What: Pride at Work, L.A. ’s Phelps-a-thon

When : January 17th from 2:30-5:00PM

Where: the Beverly Hilton Hotel – 9876 Wilshire Blvd.

Web: http://phelps-a-thon.com/goldenglobes.html

What is the Westboro Baptist Church ?

The Westboro Baptist Church run a website called: godhatesfags.com.

They’re led by a man named Fred Phelps, a man whose slogans include: “God Hates Fags” and “Thank God for Dead Soldiers” as these are proof of “punishment” for America ’s sins. They believe America is doomed and will be destroyed by god because of LGBTQ people, Women leaders, and anyone who is different from them. Nobody can be this xenophobic you say? Find out more about them here: godhatesfags.com. or here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church

What We’ll be doing:

We’ll be holding a “Phelp-a-thon” fundraiser and counter protest party as The Westboro xenophobes and gaycists will be picketing the Golden Globes due to celebrities who are out and supportive of marriage equality. We’ll be showing them that L.A. is our town, and we’re working toward equality. We’ll have music, chants, signs and, laughter to counter the hatred and all around bad ju-ju the Westboro Bunch bring.

What’s a Phelps-a-thon?

We’ll be asking people to tell they’re friends, allies, and supporters to donate via weblink to Pride at Work, L.A. in order to raise the needed funds that are our lifeline and enable us to seek equality in Marriage and at the Workplace. The totals will be updated during the counter protest to show up the WBC for what it’s worth!

Logistics: Please plan to carpool or take public transportation, Lot parking availible.

For info or to RSVP yourself or your group:

Pride At Work led a contingent of queer groups to meet with Trevor Daley at Sen Feinstein’s office on June 10th. We had folks from Courage Campaign, HRC, Bienestar, 13 Love Stories Project, Stonewall Dems, LEA (Latino Equality Alliance) and QPOC (Queer People of Color) represented. He made it clear that we were the 1st LGBT group to reach out on EFCA (we may be the only non-Labor or non-business group to do so).

We’ve learned the Senator 100% endorses a trans inclusive ENDA. She is revisiting UAFFA and a decision will be reached in 6 months. However, Trevor intimated that because the Senator is the Chair of the Judiciary Committee, the issue is still very sensitive. As for EFCA, it’s painfully obvious more queer voices are needed to push this through. It’s inconceivable in my mind that despite the findings in the Williams Institute report supporting a correlation between access to labor unions and lifting queer people out of poverty, EFCA can still be ignored as being as vital as marriage equality for our community.

I encourage folks to call Senator Feinstein TODAY and say that as a queer person you support the passage of ENDA and EFCA together. Santa Monica District Office Phone: 310-914-7300.

Join us on April 15th to learn more about this legislation and how you and your organization can play a part in this historic effort.
